Quote of the week: Sigourney Weaver

That's Not My Age may not have seen Avatar - 3D animation is not really my thing and anyone with Cameron for a surname is not very popular in our household - but I have been to an IMAX cinema. A couple of years ago, Mr TNMA (a massive Rolling Stones fan) bought tickets to Martin Scorsese's Shine a Light, but at three rows back we were so close to the rock 'n' roll action I felt quite nauseous and had to close my eyes. The Blog Widower was not impressed. Particularly as I'd already handed back my complimentary t-shirt saying, 'Give it to someone who might wear it.'

Anyway, this week's quote is from Sigourney Weaver, 60, who plays scientist, Grace Augustine (Avatar has just been released on DVD and Blu-ray) - and no, it's not about the size of James Cameron's breasts.

'I like getting older - it's interesting. I don't think it's attractive to have a taut face with a 65-year-old's body. I find that look scary. My mother was a great beauty and never succumbed to plastic surgery. She thought it was best to grow old gracefully. I feel the same. We change ourselves by looking back and trying to stay young instead of moving forward.'

And while we're on the subject of growing old gracefully, with Exile on Main Street about to be reissued, Keith Richards, 66, talks to Rolling Stone magazine about touring, 'I don’t know how the rest of them feel about roadwork at the moment. Maybe we’ll search for a different way for the Stones to go back on the road. Maybe not the football stadiums anymore. Maybe something different. You can’t go around there in lemon yellow tights forever.'

An age old problem

After seeing a photograph of myself standing next to a smooth-skinned Mary Portas, That's Not My Age has decided something has got to be done about my wrinkles. I may be kidding myself about growing old gracefully sans Botox or surgery but I just can't face (make that afford) either. And anyway, I've had lines on my forehead forever. When I met Mr TNMA he thought I was frowning at him, obviously he didn't recognise the look of true love.

So I am testing this 'revolutionary product' by Dr Kadir who according to Elle is well known in the Middle East, a dermatologist with a celebrity following - Madonna and Jennifer Anniston are fans. The blurb says the moisturizing cream contains an award-winning, anti-ageing ingredient which helps decrease wrinkle depth. Apple Lift results in plumper, toned, youthful looking skin and has a high UVA protection factor as well a Vitamin E making it a potent natural weapon in fighting fine lines and wrinkles. Phew! Sounds like just what I need.

And time to 'fess up. Before Christmas I promised I would try out this introductory set from Aromatherapy Associates and report back with before and after shots, wrinkles and all.

But then Mr TNMA took some snaps and I was horrified by the results. So horrified, I had a Hugh Grant moment - no nothing to do with a hooker and a parked car, or worse Liz Hurley - I just empathized with Grant who on approaching his 50th birthday said, "I don’t really feel all that old in myself, I actually feel rather young and sprightly but then I see a picture of myself and think, ‘Christ, who is that old man?’” So, sorry but you won't be seeing any close up mug-shots after all. I'm just not brave enough, even Demi Moore got called old and ugly after spending two hundred thousand dollars on surgery, and posting photos on Twitter.

Anyhow, here's my belated verdict on the Aromatherapy Associates gift box, bearing in mind that I was just slapping products on randomly and not following instructions:

1. All the products smelled gorgeous and left my skin feeling super soft.
2. I will probably buy the Fine Line Face Oil even though my lines are not fine, they are of the Gordon Ramsay variety.
3. The Intensive Skin Treatment Oil helped soothe my painful, cracked heels.

And apparently Hugh Grant has started doing pilates to keep himself looking young - do you have any anti-ageing tips?

Smells like mid-life crisis

That's Not My Age is of an age when wrinkle creams and anti-ageing products are the future/my only hope. (Still trying to find one to reduce the lines on my forehead - but I'm not sure that such a miracle-in-a-jar exists. Even super-strength Botox might struggle to fill these cracks and I'm too poor/scared to try). Anyway, I'm slightly flummoxed by this Pro-age antiperspirant from Dove. Containing moisturising cream and sunflower oil for sensitive skin - does this mean as well as the wrinkles, dry hair and old lady's feet I'm going to end up with tender 'pits? Maybe Pro-age deodorant will keep my underarms looking young? You know what they say about hailing a cab in a sleeveless top over forty. Or could it have dual-action properties, like haemorrhoid cream on eye bags? Perhaps it's simpler than that, maybe it'll just stop me smelling like an old person?
